5 Questions & 5 Answers With Illustrator Roberta Baird

Q: What is your creative process?

After I receive and assignment, I begin researching and sketching for character development. When I feel I know my character well enough, I move on to working on the book layout.  When all the necessary people involved with the book production are satisfied with the sketches, I clean them up and scan them. I then take them into Photoshop where I digitally paint them.

Q: How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as stylized/painterly with a whimsical approach. I like to infuse a little humor where ever I can

Q: What do you specialize in?

I specialize in painting animals both realistically and stylized, and I also enjoy illustrating subject matter with darker themes, such as monsters and witches, of the fairytale kind.

Q: Are you working on anything at the moment?

I'm working on a wonderful children's book and app with Dawn Publications,  about the different kinds of creatures that live in the Florida Everglades, to be published in 2014. I think kids are really going to love it!

Q: What was the last project that you completed?

I just finished a book called The Legend of Ranger, The Reindeer Who Couldn't Fly. This book will be coming out around Christmas of 2013. It's a book about hope and finding the strength within yourself to overcome your fears
